David Silver has studied and trained since 2000 to become a certified Y.M.A.A. Qigong Instructor, under Master Yang, Jwing-Ming. YMAA (Yang’s Martial Arts Association) is the world’s leading Chinese martial arts organization, with over 50 schools in 18 countries. He has taught thousands of classes on Cape Cod since 2006.

“Dr. Yang’s background as a physics professor and Ph.D in mechanical engineering and his Western scientific perspective in his qigong theory teaching appeals to me. I’m interested in a modern understanding of the human energetic circulatory system, with supporting data from current research in the field. I am an editor of Dr. Yang’s articles and more recently his book Qigong Meditation: Small Circulation. In 2007, I co-authored a book with a colleague who works in Boston using the techniques we practice in class to help improve the quality of life of people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and cancer.

  2. Hi David Silver, I am reading Sunrise Tai Chi co-authored by you and Ramel Rones and have two questions I hope you would answer:
    1) When I began learning 108-form Tai Chi, my teacher instructed me to use what I now recognize as the Taoist Breathing method as described on page 25 of your book. At the very beginning I thought that the Taoist breathing method was inappropriate and ignored it, because I had already learned what was called diaphragmatic breathing, which was equivalent to Buddhist breathing, and believed it would be more appropriate for achieving a relaxed meditative state. Also, other healthcare experts had strongly recommended diaphragmatic breathing (i.e., when one inhales as the abdomen expands) as the best way to achieve a positive therapeutic effect. Please tell me which of these two types of breathing would be better for practicing 108 Tai Chi.
    2) I think that the 108-form Tai Chi was derived from a much longer series of forms (maybe up into the hundreds of forms) that were originally designed to train warriors in closed, secret societies, and also later by various military organizations; that this large number of forms were later chiseled down to 108 mainly based on the belief that that number had a great religious significance. Do you know of a record that documents the existence of such a great number of forms that existed before the 108-form Tai Chi?

  3. Hello, Taoist breathing is ideal during tai chi and qigong practice. It generates more energy, more quickly, than Buddhist breathing.
    The number 108 comes from Buddhism, and refers to the 108 defilements. Taijiquan comes originally from Daoist monasteries on Wudang mountain, but many of the moving patterns are much older and originate at Shaolin Temple. Each posture or moving pattern can have multiple martial applications. The history of tai chi is completely lost in the mists of time and will remain so unless documents are unearthed with more detailed history.     I am interested to know if you or someone you know teaches silk reeling gigong and/or tai chi ruler neigong. I practice Guang Ping Tai Chi Chan and feel that these gigong techniques could help my level of practice.

        Please let me know which of your classesincludes push hands. I am interested in the internal aspects of nian, lian ,ni’an, sui and bu diu ding in particular. Do you teach dragon and tiger qigong as well?

        I am also interested in the 7 stages of daoist golden ruler tai chi qigong. Would you know of anyone in the area who teaches this style of qigong?

  5. Hi David,
    I just took your workshop at the Masjah center in Harwich. WOW. Every second of the workshop was concentrated with your expert knowledge, and I feel I just opened up a new world. I suffer from chronic upper bilateral myofascial pain syndrome which affects the fascia in what I can only describe as a back spasm migraine. I experience almost constant pain ranging from from 4-10+ on a pain scale, every day. It is a tightening, burning, pain that starts before I open my eyes in the morning, lasts all day, and radiates like hot rods from my inner elbows to palms, across my mid shoulders, spreading all the way up and down the sides of my spine to the tailbone, and in recent years has spread to both sides of my neck into the jaws on both sides, and the inner souls of my feet. Whenever I get triggered, it constricts so tightly, my hands naturally make fists, and it feels like my skin becomes a hardened concrete shell that no amount of pressure nor pain relief gel can relieve. Heat patches somewhat help. The only thing that really has worked for me are lidocaine shots directly into the 6 trigger points in my back and neck where the fascia was torn from too much overuse, (playing professional viola, scooping ice cream then repetitive door pulling). It’s hard to describe how frustrating the injury has been to deal with. I intend to help ease this pain with your technical training I received. I have great faith this will be another method to control the pain. Thank you. Your obvious passion for this ancient method comes forward so clearly in your teaching and words.
